Is yew poisonous to dogs and cats?

Very poisonous. It can stop the heart, sometimes without warning.

Has your pet eaten some?

Call your vet or the Animal PoisonLine straight away, even if your pet seems fine. Many poisons don't cause signs for hours, and treatment works best early. Keep the packet or a photo of what they ate. Don't try to make them sick unless a vet tells you to.

Why it's a problem

All parts of the yew tree, apart from the flesh of the red berry, contain poisons that affect the heart. Clippings from yew hedges are a common cause.

Signs to look out for

  • Being sick
  • Weakness
  • Shaking
  • Collapse
  • Breathing problems
