Are acorns and oak leaves poisonous to dogs and cats?

Can upset the stomach and damage the kidneys if lots are eaten.

Why it's a problem

Acorns contain tannins that irritate the gut and, in large amounts, can damage the kidneys. Whole acorns can also cause a blockage.

Signs to look out for

  • Being sick
  • Diarrhoea, sometimes with blood
  • Tummy pain
  • Being off food

What to do

Small amounts often only cause an upset tummy. Call your vet if your pet ate a lot, is small, or shows any of the signs above.
