Are lilies poisonous to dogs and cats?

Deadly to cats. Even pollen licked off their fur or vase water can cause kidney failure.

Has your pet eaten some?

For cats, go to a vet straight away, even if you only think they touched a lily. Treatment in the first few hours can save their kidneys. For dogs, call your vet if they seem unwell.

Why it's a problem

All parts of true lilies and day lilies are highly poisonous to cats, including the pollen and the water in the vase. A cat can be poisoned just by grooming pollen off its fur. In dogs, lilies usually only cause an upset tummy.

Signs to look out for

  • Being sick
  • Drooling
  • Being quiet or off food
  • Drinking and peeing more, then peeing less
