Are poinsettia, holly and mistletoe poisonous to dogs and cats?

Christmas plants usually only cause a mild upset tummy, but mistletoe berries can be more serious.

Why it's a problem

Poinsettia sap irritates the mouth and stomach but is rarely serious. Holly berries and leaves cause sickness and diarrhoea. Mistletoe berries can cause more serious illness if lots are eaten.

Signs to look out for

  • Drooling
  • Being sick
  • Diarrhoea

What to do

Small amounts often only cause an upset tummy. Call your vet if your pet ate a lot, is small, or shows any of the signs above.
