First aid for dogs and cats

Poisoning

Eaten, licked or been exposed to something that might be poisonous.

When to go to a vet

Call a vet or the Animal PoisonLine now, even if your pet seems fine. Many poisons take hours to cause signs.

What to do

  1. Take whatever is left away from them, and keep other pets away.
  2. Keep the packet, wrapper or a sample of the plant, or take a photo.
  3. Work out roughly how much they ate and when.
  4. Call your vet or the Animal PoisonLine (01202 509 000, a charge applies).
  5. If it is on their skin or fur, wash it off with lukewarm water and washing-up liquid, unless a vet tells you not to.

Don't

  • Don't try to make them sick with salt, mustard or anything else. It can be dangerous. Only a vet should do this.
  • Don't wait to see if signs appear.

Other first aid guides

First aid is not a substitute for a vet. If you're worried about your pet, call your vet.

Some things can't wait.

If your pet is struggling to breathe, has collapsed, or is bleeding heavily, skip the checker and call your nearest emergency vet now.

CheckMyPet gives guidance, not a diagnosis. Always follow your vet's advice.
