First aid for dogs and cats

Hit by a car or badly hurt

After an accident, a fall from a height, or a serious injury, even if they seem fine.

When to go to a vet

Always see a vet after an accident. Internal injuries often don't show at first.

What to do

  1. Make sure you are safe first, especially near traffic.
  2. Even gentle pets may bite when in pain. For dogs, you can loop a soft lead or bandage around the muzzle, unless they are being sick or struggling to breathe.
  3. Slide them onto a coat, blanket or board to keep their back as flat and still as possible. Carry cats in a box or basket.
  4. Press on any bleeding with a clean pad.
  5. Keep them warm and quiet, and call a vet to tell them you are coming.

Don't

  • Don't give food, water or human medicines.
  • Don't try to straighten a leg that looks broken.

Other first aid guides

First aid is not a substitute for a vet. If you're worried about your pet, call your vet.

Some things can't wait.

If your pet is struggling to breathe, has collapsed, or is bleeding heavily, skip the checker and call your nearest emergency vet now.

CheckMyPet gives guidance, not a diagnosis. Always follow your vet's advice.
