First aid for dogs and cats

Burns and scalds

Contact with something hot, hot water or a chemical.

When to go to a vet

Call a vet for any burn bigger than a coin, any chemical burn, or burns on the face, paws or private parts.

What to do

  1. Cool the burn with cool running water for at least 10 minutes. For chemical burns, rinse for longer.
  2. Cover it loosely with cling film or a clean, damp, non-fluffy cloth.
  3. Keep the rest of them warm, as pets can get cold quickly while you cool a burn.
  4. Call your vet.

Don't

  • Don't use ice, butter, creams or ointments.
  • Don't burst blisters.

Other first aid guides

First aid is not a substitute for a vet. If you're worried about your pet, call your vet.

Some things can't wait.

If your pet is struggling to breathe, has collapsed, or is bleeding heavily, skip the checker and call your nearest emergency vet now.

CheckMyPet gives guidance, not a diagnosis. Always follow your vet's advice.
