Is paracetamol poisonous to dogs and cats?

Can kill a cat, even in a small amount. Dangerous for dogs too.

Has your pet eaten some?

Call your vet or the Animal PoisonLine straight away, even if your pet seems fine. Many poisons don't cause signs for hours, and treatment works best early. Keep the packet or a photo of what they ate. Don't try to make them sick unless a vet tells you to.

Why it's a problem

Cats can’t break down paracetamol. Even part of one tablet can damage their red blood cells and liver. Dogs can be poisoned too. It is also in many cold and flu remedies.

Signs to look out for

  • Brown or blue gums
  • Swelling of the face and paws
  • Fast breathing
  • Being quiet or off food
