Is dog flea treatment poisonous to cats?
Many dog flea treatments contain permethrin, which can kill cats.
For cats, go to a vet now. On the way, if you can, wash the area with lukewarm water and washing-up liquid, then dry them and keep them warm. Only use flea treatments made for the right type of pet.
Why it's a problem
Permethrin is in many shop-bought dog flea treatments. It is safe for dogs when used as directed, but very poisonous to cats. Cats can be poisoned by having it put on them, or by cuddling up to a recently treated dog.
Signs to look out for
- Twitching, especially of the ears and face
- Shaking
