Are cooked bones poisonous to dogs and cats?

Not poisonous, but they splinter and can damage or block the gut.

Why it's a problem

Cooked bones become brittle. They can splinter and cut the mouth or gut, or get stuck in the throat, stomach or bowel.

Signs to look out for

  • Gagging or pawing at the mouth
  • Being sick
  • Straining to poo, or blood in poo
  • Tummy pain or being off food

What to do

Don't try to make them sick. Call your vet for advice, and straight away if they are gagging, being sick or in pain.
