Are cheese and milk poisonous to dogs and cats?

Not poisonous, but many pets can’t digest milk well. Small amounts of cheese are usually fine.

Why it's a problem

Many adult cats and dogs are lactose intolerant, so milk can cause diarrhoea. Cheese has less lactose but is high in fat and salt. Blue cheeses contain a mould that can make dogs unwell.

Signs to look out for

  • Diarrhoea
  • Wind
  • Being sick

What to do

No action is usually needed. Call your vet if they ate blue cheese, or a lot of cheese, and seem unwell.
