Is caffeine poisonous to dogs and cats?

Affects the heart and nerves in the same way as chocolate.

Has your pet eaten some?

Call your vet or the Animal PoisonLine straight away, even if your pet seems fine. Many poisons don't cause signs for hours, and treatment works best early. Keep the packet or a photo of what they ate. Don't try to make them sick unless a vet tells you to.

Why it's a problem

Caffeine is closely related to the poison in chocolate. Coffee grounds, beans, tea bags, energy drinks and caffeine tablets can all be dangerous, especially for small pets.

Signs to look out for

  • Restlessness or hyperactivity
  • Being sick
  • A racing heart
  • Shaking or fits
