Is avocado poisonous to dogs and cats?

The flesh may upset the stomach. The stone can cause a blockage.

Why it's a problem

Avocado contains a substance called persin, which can cause sickness and diarrhoea in dogs and cats. The bigger risk is the stone, which can get stuck in the gut. Guacamole often contains onion and garlic too.

Signs to look out for

  • Being sick
  • Diarrhoea
  • Tummy pain or straining, if the stone was swallowed

What to do

Call your vet if the stone was swallowed, if they ate guacamole, or if they seem unwell.
