Are apples poisonous to dogs and cats?

Safe in small pieces without the core. The seeds and core are best avoided.

Why it's a problem

Apple flesh is a healthy treat for dogs. Remove the core, which can cause a blockage, and the seeds, which contain a small amount of cyanide. A few seeds swallowed by accident are very unlikely to cause harm.

Signs to look out for

  • Upset tummy if a lot is eaten

What to do

No action is needed if they ate a slice or two. Call your vet if they swallowed a whole core and are being sick or off their food.
